Titan2 Sn (ein Metall) per. Wortschatz fach. (18. Jh.) Onomastische Bildung. Von seinem Entdecker, dem deutschen Chemiker H. Klaproth 1795 so benannt. Er wollte dem neu entdeckten Element einen nichtssagenden Namen geben, und da er das kurz zuvor von ihm entdeckte Uran nach dem ungefähr gleichzeitig entdeckten Planeten Uranus benannt hatte und diese Bezeichnung aus der griechischen Mythologie entnommen wurde, griff er auf einen beliebigen anderen Namen der griechischen Mythologie zurück.
